2011's Best Episodes: Michael Scott Signs Off, Community Can get Chaotic
Harry Shum Junior. From Oprah's remarkably low-key farewell for the year's most soul-crushing break-around the Great Wife (Kalicia, no!), the season was filled with fantastic several hours of television - virtually which we seen. There has been teary goodbyes (Friday Evening Lights' Texas forever! Smallville's tights and travel arrangements!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations occur round the front porch from the cabin, like on Homeland?) as well as we made room for just about any little Glee (because certain underdogs deserved it). Which made this list. Stay updated all week for that top 25.Here's the second batch inside our extended countdown of 2011's best episodes (Get swept up first with Episodes 25-21and Episodes 20-16):15. "Remedial Chaos Theory," CommunityNever frightened of taking risks, this unique Season 3 episode of Community moves the knowledge from Greendale's study room to game evening at Troy and Abed's new apartment, where one decision - which character retrieves the pizza within the delivery guy - produces seven alternate timelines. While each timeline features recurring gags - Rob striking his mind round the ceiling fan, Pierce boasting about hooking up tabs on Eartha Kitt inside an plane bathroom, Britta singing "Roxanne" - it's the subtle versions inside the characters' interactions from timeline to timeline that exquisitely display why the dpi of pals is smart together. Most considerably, it stresses how important the crowd is always to Rob, even though he's forget about alone holding it together. If possibly we are capable of seeing an entire episode that occurs with Evil Abed inside the "pitch-dark timeline"!14. "Asian F," GleeSay what you need to in regards to the current season of Glee - Why did Quinn go psycho? Where did Mr. Schue disappear to? Can Sue be saved? - there's no denying that "Asian F" warrants a standing O to become a great showcase for your lesser-seen figures, all whom were trying to beat historic struggles. Mercedes channeled her inner J. Hud as she made a decision to defend myself against her spotlight, Mike unleashed his pent-up angst for his parents to West Side Story's perfect pressure-oven number "Awesome," and Emma experienced an Obsessive-compulsive disorder relapse when forced to handle her destructive, "ginger root root-supremacist" parents. If very little else, the hour will be a potent indication that Glee is able to do delivering the heartbreaking goods.13. "The Doctor's Wife," Physician WhoIt takes fantasy/horror/sci-fi author Neil Gaiman to pen an instalment that's crazy to describe, yet heartbreaking because signature Physician Who way. Through numerous convoluted and dubious occasions, his time machine, also called the TARDIS, shuts lower which is matrix vanishes, only to be incarnated in the daffy lady named Idris. The Doctor always did call the TARDIS "old girl," right? He as well as the TARDIS-possessed lady reminisce, banter, flirt in addition to hug, by episode's finish, we now have bought for their longtime, relationship. Bad the TARDIS can't remain because body or possess a voice again, nevertheless the affection we are feeling for the large blue police box has bending.12. "Goodbye, Michael," WorkInchHello, will everybody let me know when the ever airs?" And understanding that, Michael Scott needed off his microphone, mouthed one last, quiet "that's what she mentioned" and left Scranton and Dunder Mifflin within the rearview mirror while he boarded your flight headed for Colorado together with a amount of happiness along with his "soupsnake" Carol. Like the humor in the Office, the episode was understated and pitch-perfect. He carried out paintball with Dwight inside the car park and shared an anti-goodbye goodbye with Jim. For die-hard fans, it's still difficult to think that "Prison Mike" is not coming back (except maybe for your series finale -- fingers joined!), but no less than he received a worthy send-off together with a Best Boss award he didn't have to replace on themselves.11. "Episode One," Downton AbbeyThe miniseries drops audiences among the remarkably rapidly paced arena of the Earl of Grantham, his American wife, their three kids (note: no male heir!), his blustering, blistering mother in addition to their equally complicated downstairs staff, an hour or so approximately so artfully written, paced and completed that people have immediately taken sides: To begin with: We now have already sent a night time meal invitation for the Dowager Countess (the treasure Maggie Cruz), we wish only happiness for neglected youthful brothers and sisters Edith and Sybil, which we sympathise with cousin Matthew Crawley, whose entrance into this elegant world coincides with this particular own. However, Lady Grantham's sourpuss maid O'Brien don't hinder Bates and Anna's budding romance, Lady Mary may use less entitlement, and Thomas is just pure evil. Inside an era of dwindling daytime soaps, Downton's first episode is rapidly and completely addictive, enough to make sure that we preferred to get this costume drama part of our daily "tales."

Sean Hair hair combs -- also called either P. Diddy, Diddy, Puff Father or Puffy -- remains deeply deeply in love with Rat Pack-style culture for virtually 10 years. "I used to be watching 'Ocean's 11' which i simply couldn't interact with it," Diddy told the NY Daily News in 2005 in regards to the George Clooney-fronted remake. "You've every one of these black symbols, Chris Rock or Chris Tucker in comedy, Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx in acting, me and Jay-Z in music, what about us? Now you have to put the best black symbols in the film together. We're not experimenting in 'do-rags and low riders any more.Inch Six years later, Diddy finally has their very own 'Ocean's 11' -- climax merely a 30 second vodka commercial, seems partially inspired by 'The Hangover' and doesn't include a number of people large names stated with the rapper/actor formerly. Williams ('Boardwalk Empire,' 'The Wire'), Jesse Williams ('Grey's Anatomy'), Frank Vincent ('Goodfellas,' 'The Sopranos') and Puffy themselves just like a faux Rat Pack tearing through Las vegas. Meaning "Luck Be described as a Lady" as sang by Frank Sinatra, together with a group of ladies in cocktail dresses, introduced by 'Entourage' co-star Dania Ramirez. Exciting! Anthony Mandler does the pointing honors -- he's shot videos for everyone within the Killings to Eminem -- but that certain certainly may have used the glossy touch of Brett Ratner. Maybe producer Ben Silverman too. Needs more white-colored tigers and decadence. Uncover the shocking truth above. Drink properly, y'all! Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Edgar Wright Programs 35mm Fest of Movies He's Never Seen
After programming his favorite cult and classic films in two “Wright Stuff” slates at the New Beverly Cinema, Edgar Wright is returning this month with an unusual twist: For eight nights starting December 9, the Scott Pilgrim director will present double features of films he hasn’t seen. Last time he told you to “envy these virgins;” this time, he’s the virgin! It’s the ultimate game of cinematic catch-up that embraces the bashful truth about cinephilia; no matter how many of the greats you’ve seen, there’s always one (or two or a hundred) classics you have yet to check off the list. Wright’s guest programming fest, dubbed The Wright Stuff III: Movies Edgar Has Never Seen, will pack in eight consecutive nights of double features at the Los Angeles institution owned by Quentin Tarantino and run by Michael Torgan and Julia Marchese. (Marchese’s recent petition to save 35mm film is still seeking signatures; naturally, The Wright Stuff III will be screening 35mm prints.) Over at the fantastic blog Sergio Leone and the Infield Fly Rule, Dennis Cozzalio caught up with Wright to discuss how he went about programming his slate of never-seen films: EW: How it started was, at first I e-mailed a bunch of directors, actors and writers, told them what I was doing and said, give me your top-10 must-sees. Some of those people gave me lists that were enormous. Bill Hader’s list and Daniel Waters’ list were in the hundreds. Quentin Tarantino and Judd Apatow and Joss Whedon all gave me top 10s. So did John Landis and Joe Dante — actually, Joe’s was longer than 10. Then I threw it open to people on my blog, and that produced another thousand suggestions. Then I started looking for little links between films. I had to leave so many out. There were some that were so close to being scheduled that didn’t make it, which was disappointing, but some were left off because they do play a lot. I wanted to go for films that don’t get as much exposure. On the dwindling availability of 35mm film prints and why, for his first viewing of these films, it was a must to see them on the big screen on film: EW: It’s a very bittersweet thing to discover that your chances to see some of these films on 35mm are kind of dwindling very fast. It’s one of the main reasons I like doing these seasons at the New Beverly — sharing the experience. There is nothing better than watching the movies with a crowd. As home theater gets better, people don’t necessarily think about going out to see them. When I first announced the schedule, one person on my blog commented, “But a lot of these are on DVD or Netflix Instant!” And I had to think, yeah, you kind of missed the point. I know that. I own a lot of them myself. But that’s not necessarily the way I want to see them, especially for the first time. Read Cozzalio’s full interview with Wright here and see the full line-up listed at the New Beverly’s website and in further detail on Wright’s blog. (My pick? December 12’s Umbrellas of Cherbourg — swoon! — paired with Chungking Express.) Screening films you’ve never seen before is a brilliant idea in many ways, the first being that it gives Wright the chance to see these selections projected on a proper screen, in glorious 35mm. The communal aspect is key, too; repertory cinemas have the ability to conjure a magical crackle in the air just from the quality of being there, let alone if it’s a great film being experienced for the first time with fellow movie lovers. But here’s what I love most about Wright’s never-seen films idea: In admitting he’s never seen these 18 films before — Edgar Wright, genre student, famous film-loving movie nerd, the man who’s poured more knowing references into his work than any director of his and most any generation, really — he’s made it OK to admit there are gaps in one’s breadth of film knowledge. Bragging rights aren’t important in the scheme of things; it’s sharing a love for film with others that makes the film community so vibrant. So here goes. Here’s one I’ve never seen: Sophie’s Choice. Phew! That was easier than I thought it’d be. Your turn!

Happy 110th Birthday, Walt Disney! What's His Most Underrated Moment in Film?
Happy 110th birthday to Walt Disney, the man who single-handedly transformed moviemaking forever with whimsy and sheer imagination. Almost 75 years after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs first hit theaters, his magical movie empire remains astonishing and prolific, and we stand cryogenically frozen in awe. Hard to believe a man who won 26 Oscars (only three less than Hilary Swank) could have underrated moments in film, but let’s explore that strange idea now: What is Walt Disney’s most under-heralded great moment on film? Walt’s uneven stretch between 1945-1950 probably has some underrated moments, but I’m going to credit One Hundred and One Dalmatians — a revered work in the canon — for its under-discussed perks, namely how fucking fabulous everything is. 1) Roger and Anita have a kickass marriage, and a photogenically quaint one that would inspire everyone from Diana Vreeland to Truman Capote. London is a picturesque Fisher Price village with glamorous pooches and owners sauntering about, and Roger and Anita are downright cosmopolitan canted above it all. 2) Roger is the most ideal man in Disney history. His improvisatory songwriting? His multi-instrumentalist flair? That’s some Brill Building brio. Disney so often offers male characters who aspire to be kings or great champions; Roger just wants to be Gerry Goffin. 3) Rod Taylor ranks among the most underrated ’60s heartthrobs, and his voice work as the valiant, but humble Pongo is perfect. 4) One Hundred and One Dalmatians has one of the most trenchant pop culture references in all of Disney history: When the evil dognappers Jasper and Horace watch television at their cramped abode, they’re tuned into What’s My Crime?, a parody of What’s My Line? featuring criminals as mystery guests. The panelists overly polite questions (“Did you do someone in?”) and the hilarious grand prize (“Two-weeks stay at a fashionable seaside resort, all expenses paid — that is, of course, after you’ve paid your debt to society”) are subtle classics. Click to 3:20 to see. 5) Cruella de Vil? Is Tallulah Bankhead as sprung from the skull of Athena. Miranda Priestley would buckle under her fearsomeness. She cackles, you die. Cigarette holders are cool. The end. What’s your favorite underrated Disney moment/film? Do you really want to bring down the room with a Fox and the Hound love letter?
Stateside sitcoms mixed overseas
'The Large Bang Theory''The New Girl''Glee''Modern Family'If every U.S. comedy possessed this mixture-cultural appeal and star energy of "Pals," global entrepreneurs of yank-made TV comedies would constantly be laughing completely for the bank.Since the retirement of "Pals," which created 10 Golden Globes nominations throughout its run, peak-time showcases for U.S. laffers on mainstream systems across continental Europe will be the exception instead of the rule -- though their fates are actually better inside the U.K.In Gaul, where U.S. procedurals top primetime ratings every year, Yank comedy shows remain underexposed with the large tv producers, restricted to daytime slots on DTT, satellite and cable channels.Commercial network M6 acquired "Modern Family" (nominated for Globes in most of their initial few seasons) in March 2010 and contains since broadcast about it on pay DTT internet Paris Premiere. "We view comedies like a kind of niche program concentrating on a very narrow audience segment."Additionally to wider cultural factors, being named into French is an additional reason U.S. laffers stay with the fringes of agendas in Gaul."Jokes don't translate well in French," Alduy states. Probably the most sophisticated American sitcoms you shouldn't be just like U.S. action drama and crime shows."U.S. comedies have proven popular in Germany, where they are drawing youthful audiences, states Lorene Nowicki at Eurodata TV Worldwide."two and a half Males" has nabbed a 16 business on pay TV internet ProSieben, around four points within the web's average share for teens.Despite the fact that The the spanish language language auds aren't easily attracted by American laffers, the accelerating trend across continental Europe for local remakes of eighties U.S. sitcoms, such as the The the spanish language language versions of "Golden Women" and "Cheers," signifies for this reason that humor can effectively navigate national frontiers. In Blighty, pubcaster Funnel 4, its youth-skewed digital station E4, and paybox Sky will be the channels most carefully associated with U.S. comedy. Until it finally left E4 this fall, getting been poached by Comedy Central inside the U.K., "Pals" will be a mainstay in the broadcaster since 1995.While you commentator mentioned, " 'Friends' can be as connected with Funnel 4 as 'Coronation Street' is always to ITV." In August, it absolutely was calculated that 31 in the show's total 236 halfhour episodes were examined on Funnel 4 and E4 throughout only one week.Do i think the Funnel 4 ever find another U.S. comedy that could match the extended-running success of "Pals"? Fox's "Glee" made an appearance as though a possible contender until Sky outbid Funnel 4 for your skein taken. This Season, E4's success with "Glee" handled to find the year's finest rating acquisition on digital television inside the U.K. Season two averaged 2.6 000 0000 audiences (a 9 share) with 48% in the audience punching the vital 16-34 demographic coveted by entrepreneurs. "But comedy has experienced a revival within the Atlantic. At this time, we are near the top of the mountain."Striking comedy gold within the L.A. Tests is simpler theoretically, but last May had all the makings from the gold hurry, according to Hay. Newcomer Globes noms competitors "New Girl" and "2 Broke Women" are increasingly being ready for top-profile slots on E4."Finding one jewel is unusual, but to complete up buying two shows in one year signifies the very best goal," she states.Meanwhile, "The Big Bang Theory," which bowed on E4 in 2008, might be the web's top show, creating a collection average of 475,000 audiences. At Sky, purchases topper Sarah Wright, getting introduced "Modern Family" to British auds since november 2009, has come up with a considerable chunk of U.S. comedies.Additionally to "Modern Family," among the laffers that play across Sky's channels are "The Middle,In . "Cougar Town" and "Hot in Cleveland," not negelecting seasoned comedies "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Simpsons."The impact of fare like "Modern Family" also advised the paybox to start buying and selling in homegrown laffers such as the recently re-commissioned sitcom "Mount Enjoyable.""Our goal is always to have as rounded a portfolio of comedies as you can,In . states Wright. "It might seem apparent, but comedies have to be funny. Personally, 'Modern Family' separated itself because it were built with a nearly European sensibility. Just what the New You'll be able to Film Critic Circle Honours Mean for your Oscars
The NY Film Experts Circle given out some honours on Tuesday. Well, not "given out," alone, (they'll do that inside a ceremony next season), nonetheless they did announce the individuals who win. Simply what does all this mean? Can be found day individuals who win actually the odds-on faves for Oscar glory? Once the recent trends in the correlation between NYFCC individuals who win and Academy Award individuals who win certainly are a barometer, the reaction to that question for you is, "It's dependent round the category." Overall, while using eight corresponding groups involving the two organizations returning five years, the probability of one of the individuals who win taking home an Oscar are 48 percent. Very good! But, as pointed out, the course has turned into a key. Put it using this method: Kaira Pitt and Jessica Chastain ... better start practicing your acceptance speeches! Throughout the final five years, the champion for top Actor and greatest Supporting Actress has won 4 of every 5 occasions. However from the tragic gold gold coin: Meryl Streep, Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian (the 2nd two co-written the script for 'Moneyball') may not desire to clean off a completely new perfect their mantels quite yet. In the last five years, only Helen Mirren, in 2006, ongoing to win the Academy Award for top Actress. And, remarkably -- considering you will discover two chances here -- the NYFCC Best Script champion only taken the Oscar for either Best Modified Script or Best Original Script once -- 'No Country For Old Men' acquired a Best Modified Script Oscar in 2007. The final results within the last five years of NYFCC individuals who win and Academy awards individuals who win are below (Individuals who win of are both in bold). UPDATE: Paramount Responds To Melrose II Fund Lawsuit Over Profits From Transformers And Other Films
UPDATE: Paramount has responded to the Melrose II lawsuit. Paramount has complied with its obligations to Melrose 2 and has been forthcoming in the audit process. We are disappointed that these sophisticated investors would choose to file a lawsuit filled with hyperbole that ignores the true facts rather than seeing that process through to completion. The Melrose 2 investors have already received almost 90% of their investment back under the financing agreement, and a number of the films in which they participate (such as the successful Transformers 3) remain in the earliest stages of their earning potential. While we intend to vigorously defend this lawsuit, the differences between the parties positions are relatively modest in amount and we are confident they can be resolved in the ordinary course. Virginia Lam, spokesperson for Paramount Pictures. EARLIER, 3:47 PM: See the full complaint here. LOS ANGELES, November 29, 2011 Kirkland & Ellis LLP is representing Melrose Investors 2 LP (Melrose 2) in a breach of contract case in which Melrose 2 seeks to recover profits related to its nearly $375 million investment in 29 films produced by Paramount Pictures Corporation and DW Studios L.L.C., formerly known as Dreamworks Studios (Defendants). The 29 films, which include such hits as Mission Impossible 3, Charlottes Web, Dreamgirls, Flags of Our Fathers, Blades of Glory, Jackass 2 and all three Transformers films, among others, have grossed close to $7 billion to date. The investor group was hoping to avoid being the third co-financing vehicle to have filed suit against Paramount and DW Studios LLC, but despite our ongoing efforts to settle our differences, Paramount has refused to cooperate, a spokesperson for the investor group stated. The complaint alleges: In 2006, Defendants entered into an agreement with Melrose 2 through which Melrose 2 would own up to a 25% copyright interest in up to 30 films that Defendants produced. To acquire this ownership interest, Melrose 2 agreed to fund a pro rata amount of the production costs. Melrose 2 met its obligations and has to date, provided nearly $375 million to Defendants to produce 29 films. In the five years since the agreement was signed, Melrose 2 has not received any profits from their nearly $375 million investment. Defendants have repeatedly hindered Melrose 2s audits, engaged in obstructionist tactics, overstated losses and understated the revenues received in connection with the exploitation of the Melrose 2-funded films. Paramount has deliberately inflated losses and underreported gross receipts and we plan to aggressively pursue our clients claims and recover its share of the profits in these films, said Kirkland & Ellis attorney Mark Holscher, who leads the Kirkland team, together with partner Diana Torres. Mr. Holscher is recognized as one of Californias Top 100 attorneys and is a nationally recognized bet-the-company trial attorney. In 2010, he won a $52 million verdict on behalf of actor Don Johnson in a breach of contract and copyright infringement case involving unpaid profits against Rysher Entertainment, Qualia Capital LLC and 2929 Entertainment, Inc.

Protestors march on Wall Street
Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protestors clogged the streets of lower Manhattan Thursday morning on the second-month anniversary of the movement. Rousted from their temporary home in Zuccotti Park earlier this week by riot police sent in by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the group reformed nearby. It marched toward Wall Street this morning with its message of income inequality, blocking entrances of the NY Stock Exchange and hoping, but not succeeding, in disrupting the ringing of the opening bell. Cordons set up around the NYSE and roadblocks throughout the area kept the group somewhat in check, but they filled the streets, blocking traffic, marching and chanting in a "Day of Action" marking two-months of protest. Police, out in force, have made a number of arrests and a certain amount of confrontation is expected to continue throughout the day. The group had planned to occupy subway stations in each of the five boroughs, then take their message to Foley Square, outside NY's courthouses. "All day, all week shut down Wall Street," protestors chanted. "We are the 99%." This week is seen a crucial one for the movement after police removed tents and all personal items from Zuccotti Park that had made it possible for protestors to camp overnight, and become a fixture in the area. They now need to find alternate places to stay and reconvene each day. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

"So coping with an British team from Aardman, that are so well-known around the globe, gave our film a built-in worldwide feel and look.InchWith "Cars 2," Pixar abandoned the fundamental Americana setting of Radiator Springs meant for a wider worldwide scale, with pit stops in Tokyo, japan, japan, Paris, London and Italia."It absolutely was developed becoming an worldwide story in the get-pass John Lasseter," states "Cars 2" producer Denise Ream. "He got the very first idea on a holiday around the world marketing the very first -- plus a couple of from the humor, like driving round the 'wrong' or opposite side inside the U.K."To get pregnant "Rio" at Blue Sky, Brazilian-born director Carlos Saldanha made a decision round the eponymous city and built the story around it, reaping helpful benefits round the creative team's drive "to educate yourself regarding a worldwide and set that was not done yet," the director states. "After I was writing, I thought about how precisely 'Ratatouille' used Paris so well, filter systems Rio? It's so photogenic and exotic. After which it everything -- the animation palette, the appearance, the music activity -- all just went naturally from that."Native boy Saldanha is thrilled to realize that "Rio" may finish off being the finest film of year in South usa. "Everybody am proud to find out a film set there, while for American audiences, there's really a cultural challenge." He notes that whenever the project was greenlit, "We understood it absolutely was somewhat harmful, setting the story in Rio. However when we'd handled to obtain and done all the trailers and promotion, we just considered it an international movie.""It's certainly well suited for worldwide audiences to be capable of go to the movies and discover something that's relevant and part of their world," confirms Ream, who signifies the worldwide trend may also be connected with filmmakers growing their storytelling muscles: "They're up to date in exploring unfamiliar cell phone industry's, as well as the technology enables us being a lot more adventurous. In the Pixar perspective, it's all about the storytellers just letting their creativity really go wild."Osher stresses that animation is actually very good worldwide. "Effective animated films frequently well outshine worldwide in comparison to the things they're doing in your area," according to him. Is All My Children Still Headed for the Web?
Cameron Mathison All My Children has already left the TV airwaves, but are the residents of Pine Valley headed for a more permanent (and unexpected) ending? Plans to continue the ABC soap online in 2012 have been put on hold, ABC Soaps In Depth reports. All My Children: How did it all end? Prospect Park, the company behind the online productions of both All My Children and One Life to Live, has decided that it only needs one soap to launch its new internal channel - The Online Network. Because One Life to Live has been more successful in re-signing current cast members - 13 so far - Prospect Park has benched All My Children. All My Children has only signed Cameron Mathison and Lindsay Hartley to reprise their roles online. The company was in negotiations with additional actors to return, but those talks have also been placed on hold. When Mathison talked with TVGuide.com in late October, he said his longtime co-star Rebecca Budig "is open to ... possibilities" and also sounded optimistic about an appearance by series mainstay Susan Lucci. All My Children comes to an end: Creator Agnes Nixon and the cast look back One Life to Live will wrap its ABC run in January. A rep for Prospect Park could not immediately be reached for comment. Do you think Prospect Park should stick with AMC?

Universal Plans A Grim Night
It's gettin' bad aroun' here...Spec scripts are coming back into fashion in Hollywood, but what also seems clear is that if you want a studio to take notice of your little opus, a fake trailer is the way to go. The latest to adopt that strategy are Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey, who just sold their Grim Night to Universal for rather a lot of money.Fake trailers, of course, aren't new at all: the Coen Brothers made one to get Blood Simple up and running. But living in the future as we do, we now at least get to see them when enterprising execs leak them online. So what we can immediately glean about Grim Night is that it's an interesting looking mash-up of dark fairytale, conventional stalker-horror-alien-invasion-monster-movie, and currently modish global pandemic story. It seems that once a year, be-hooded "Grims" visit the entire world, causing planet-wide panic and much battening down of hatches. That's the hook, at least. What the actual story is has yet to become clear, but we'll go out on a limb and suggest that it might be about a lone survivor, or group of same, out and about on the very night that they ought to be safely hiding indoors. Who are the Grims, and what do they want? That Jawa-ish look suggests that, Phantasm-like, they might want to shrink us and ship us off to be slaves on Mars. Bryan Bertino and his Unbroken Films partner Adrienne Biddle are producing Grim Night, along with Marc Platt (Scott Pilgrim, Drive... not the Marc Platt who used to write Doctor Who). Bertino directed The Strangers. Last we heard he'd relinquished directing duties on Strangers 2 to Laurent Briet, but there's no indication yet whether he plans to be behind the cameras for this one.

Rick Santorum Calls 'SNL' Sketch 'Bullying' (Video)
Mark Wilson/Getty Images Rick Santorum isn't laughing at a Saturday Night Live sketch that depicted Andy Samberg as him participating in "Yet another GOP debate" from a gay bar in San Francisco's Castro District. The former Pennsylvania senator and current GOP presidential nominee hopeful told New Hampshire radio station WGIR that the sketch counted as "bullying." "The left, unfortunately, participates in bullying more than the right does," he told the radio host. "They say that they're tolerant, and they're anything but tolerant of people who disagree with them and support traditional values." PHOTOS: Best Presidents in Movies and TV Santorum said he hadn't actually seen the sketch, saying, "I've heard about it. I haven't had a chance to see it. I've had a pretty heavy schedule to be honest with you. I've heard what it's about and I'm not surprised, let's put it that way." The candidate has been outspoken in his criticism of gay rights and has signed a pledge opposing same-sex marriage. He has also been critical of the repeal of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. Santorum also became the victim of an Internet stunt arranged by gay sex-advice columnist Dan Savage in 2003, when his last name was given a crude definition and became the top Google result when someone searched "Santorum." The candidate told the radio host, "I welcome the criticism." Saturday Night Live Politics

Europeans court Asian buyers
BUSAN -- While Hollywood's presence at the Busan film fest has been relatively low key this year, Europe has put on a muscular showing at Korea's premier event, with 80 films and dozens of biz figures doing the rounds of the newly inaugurated film center. "We are supporting 20 films here, and 19 directors have come here, along with one or two producers. It's good to have a group presenting their films, it's good to have a spotlight," said European Film Promotion rep Mareen Gerisch. The EFP are regulars at Busan, and indeed at most of the fests in the region. European films make up more than a quarter of the 307 pics screening at Busan, and the Korean public appear very interested. Many screenings have been sold out, and there has been a lot of interest in the Q&A sessions and at the market, said Gerisch.
"It's a combination of the festival and also the umbrella booth, making for a European meeting point. The talent is here and companies taking part can benefit from our Film Sales Support that is available to European sales agents as a marketing tool for European films to Korea and the rest of Asia. The different things sit together very well," said Gerisch. The pics featured come from all over Europe, from the large established markets like Germany, Denmark, Italy, France and the Netherlands to newer emerging countries like Serbia, the Baltic states and Ireland. Are Asian markets opening up? "The audiences are very young and very receptive to foreign films. They are film literate and not just into celebrity culture," said Dominic Wright of Ripple Pictures, attending Busan with the Irish film "Parked," featuring Colm Meaney. Asian buyers are still looking mainly for genre material, but they are saying they want more human stories, smaller films too. "Audiences are changing here and it's a very exciting time. There is massive market potential for European films here," said Wright. Wright said the fest also gave him the opportunity to promote Ireland as a co-production venue and its tax benefits. Irish helmer Thaddeus O'Sullivan, who is presenting his "Stella Days" at the fest, described the Korean level of interest as "spectacular." "We've had massive audiences, even at my screening at 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Interesting too, it seems to be mostly women, and young people," said O'Sullivan. The EFP has organized an umbrella stand at the Asian Film Market, which runs until Thursday, and it is hosting 29 European companies there, including 22 sales companies and seven EFP member organizations. It also helps to bring the big names to Busan, which this year included French thesp Isabelle Huppert, who attended the screening of her latest film "My Little Princess." She was joined by French helmer Luc Besson, who was presenting "The Lady," a biopic of Burmese democracy activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The pic's Malaysian star Michelle Yeoh was also at Busan. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Reichel was charged with a felony count of placing foreign objects in edibles after squirting Visine into the water bottle used by her 20-year-old roommate Briannia Charapata “on numerous occasions.” Consequently, according to the Daily Mail, Charapata started feeling “nauseated, suffered from diarrhoea, loss of appetite and was tired for no reason.” After two weeks of feeling unwell in October, Charapata visited a doctor who was unable to diagnose her. It wasn’t until November, when Charapata overheard another student telling people about Reichel’s eye drop stunt, that she realized what had happened and went to the police. Upon her arrest, Reichel confessed to the crime and explained that she was inspired by the Wedding Crashers scene in which Owen Wilson adds Visine to Bradley Cooper’s drink so that he can spend more alone time with Cooper’s onscreen love interest, Rachel McAdams. To determine Reichel’s sentence, Winnebago County Judge Barbara Key also took into consideration the student’s “lengthy history of lying and manipulation, in addition to her alcohol issues.” Police have stated that it is unlikely that Reichel, who was hoping to pursue a career in nursing, would be hired in the health care field. (Rule #98: Don’t intentionally cause bodily harm to your roommate when pursuing a nursing career.) David Dobkin’s Wedding Crashers, which was written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, has not inspired any other college crimes. · Student jailed for 90 days for putting eyedrops into her room-mate’s water after seeing stunt on Wedding Crashers [Daily Mail] Transformers 3 Online Free

3 Toronto Takeaways: Oscars, Sex and Movie Sales
This week's The Hollywood Reporter examines the TIFF as it concludes its 10-day run, having served up 339 films, it left several dominant impressions that show this year is like no other.our editor recommends10 Contenders Gunning for Oscars at the Toronto Film FestivalSex Sells at Toronto Film FestivalToronto Film Festival: 13 Films to Know 1. The Oscar Crown Is Up for Grabs The past four best picture winners at the Academy Awards -- No Country for Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker and The King's Speech -- played Toronto, where they established their awards potential. Last year especially, Speech, which triggered standing ovations, was hailed as an early favorite. This year, though, even the best-received films did not seem surrounded by quite the same air of inevitability. Certainly, Fox Searchlight's The Descendants, after a sneak peek at the Telluride Film Festival, earned plenty of plaudits. But Alexander Payne's first film since 2004's Sideways deals with issues of loss, grief and denial, hardly the uplifting fare the Academy tends to favor. THR's The Race blogger Scott Feinberg predicts that "the movie will have an uphill climb for a best picture nod." Still, star George Clooney -- who also was busy promoting The Ides of March, the political drama he directed -- was universally hailed as a likely best actor nominee, with Payne a potential writing and directing contender. Other movies burnished their awards credentials: Sony's Moneyball proved it is more than a baseball yarn; the Weinstein Co.'s The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius' silent movie, delighted audiences just as it had in Telluride and Cannes; Sony Pictures Classics' Jungian drama A Dangerous Method made a bid to become the thinking man's choice; and Steve McQueen's Shame, which Searchlight snatched with promises of mounting an Oscar campaign for Michael Fassbender's revealing performance as a sex addict, caused a stir. PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival: 13 Films to Know 2. Sex Is Not a Sure Thing Shame wasn't the only movie daring to reveal all. Sarah Polley's rom-com Take This Waltz took a detour into a frankly naked shower scene. "When it came, and I saw my full frontal, I had an actual heart attack -- and I'm proud to have done it," says co-star Sarah Silverman. Gina Gershon and Juno Temple bared all in William Friedkin's Killer Joe. Lars von Trier was shopping presales for his next project, Nymphomaniac, promising a movie about "the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to 50." Even David Cronenberg's Method, while far less explicit, made sex its main obsession. Still, the adage "sex sells" has never been all that true for the U.S. market. The last time Searchlight made a foray into NC-17 territory with 2003's The Dreamers, the film collected only $2.5 million domestically, compared with $12.5 million internationally. Could Shame suffer the same fate? "Shame is a brilliant movie, the best film I've seen in two years or more, but the sex could be a problem in the States," predicts veteran buyer Markus Zimmer of Germany's Concorde Films. "Of course, in Europe, we're used to rougher stuff." STORY: Sex Sells at Toronto Film Festival 3. It Wasn't Buy, Buy, Buy Last year, the Weinstein Co. made a splash at the fest, trumpeting Speech and snapping up titles like Dirty Girl, which it bought during opening weekend. This year, though it was in the hunt for Shame, like several other companies it was slower to open its checkbook. Instead, TWC used Toronto to promote its upcoming slate -- Artist, My Week With Marilyn (with an awards-worthy turn by Michelle Williams) and Ralph Fiennes' Shakespearean Coriolanus -- while also doing damage control on Madonna's W.E., which got knocked around by critics in Venice. SPC, celebrating its 20th anniversary, was just as busy, ballyhooing a half-dozen movies from Agnieszka Holland's In Darkness to Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In. But like the others, by mid-fest, SPC hadn't made a splashy purchase. Julianne Moore to play Sarah Palin in HBO film Some of the book's claims include that Palin "snorted cocaine off an overturned 55-gallon drum during a snowmobile excursion." McGinniss also writes that she slept with future NBA player Glen Rice when she was 23 and had an affair with her husband's business partner. "This is a man who has been relentlessly stalking my family to the point of moving in right next door to us to harass us and spy on us to satisfy his creepy obsession with my wife. His book is full of disgusting lies, innuendo and smears," Todd Palin said, according to Fox News. Catch up on today's latest news McGinniss' book is out Tuesday, the same day that Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol Palin's son, is releasing his memoir. So far, reviews of McGinniss' tome - including by The NY Times - have been skeptical and tepid. Van Damme Confirmed For Expandables 2
Nic Cage still a possibilityIf Sylvester Stallone gets his way, it appears that just about every burly bloke who has hefted a weapon, kicked a few bad guys about or made a quip after killing someone on screen will crop up in some fashion in the Expendables sequel. The most recent report had Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis recruited for bigger roles and now Stallone has gone on the record to confirm that Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris are officially aboard, with Nicolas Cage a distinct possibility and John Travolta still atop the wish list. Van Damme, of course, turned Sly down when asked about the first film, but seems to have had a change of heart now he's seen how it works. "We'll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one," Stallone tells Entertainment Weekly. "We've got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage," says Sly. "We're trying to work out different scenarios. I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot. So we're always looking for actors like Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. I like those kinds of guys. Someone did it for me and I like to see if I can do it for them. We also need some new blood in there, a Navy Seal-type, because with the Expendables none of them have 20-20 vision anymore. They need some help, man. "Might that new blood refer to a certain former Twilight werewolf currently itching to prove his action credentials with Abduction? Taylor Lautner's name has come up in past rumours, but we're taking a strictly wait-and-see approach to that bit of casting.... With Simon West calling the shots this time around, The Expendables 2 team will head to Bulgaria at the end of the month to start filming. We can likely expect the movie next August. I Spent 29 Minutes Playing Dirty Dancing On Facebook So You Don't Have To
Not every Facebook game can be as engaging as that of our sister site Deadline. Take the Hollywood social-media fun-time application unveiled today: Dirty Dancing, a hip-swinging, watermelon-schlepping journey through all the rocking romance of the classic 1987 film. But pixelated! Because, you know, nobody puts Baby in a corner, but apparently putting her in 16-bit animation is totally fine. “By visiting http://apps.facebook.com/dirtydancinggame, everyone who has ever wanted to be a part of those magical times in the Catskills can now have the time of their lives by acting as managers and caretakers of Kellerman’s Resort,” notes a press release sent along to Movieline HQ. “Players and their Facebook friends will join the characters to build the resort, provide guests with fun activities and dances, spread romance and enjoy music from the classic Dirty Dancing soundtrack. The game is designed using Pixel Art to re-create that fun and innocence which made Dirty Dancing one of the most popular films of the ’80s.” The time of my life, eh? Let’s give it a shot! Uh, whoa. “Pick a Trainer now!” OK! Stop yelling! So wait, though: I’m a straight guy. Am I supposed to want Johnny as a trainer? I think? He’s the dancer, right? Isn’t it creepy if I go with the coltish teen virgin? Fuck it. Johnny it is. [SELECT] Swell! I don’t… see them? Is that the clubhouse over there, though? I could use a drink. There are girls in the bar, yes? Six vodka gimlets and a hotel key is perfectly good romance. Let’s get sparking! “Spread romance”? I love the euphemisms! Anyway, sure, I’ll click. Heads up, Single Guest: I am totally going to drop a romance wave on you right now. Again? So soon? OK, I think I can. But you said. Ugh. Let me get a towel.Watch The Hangover 2 Full Movie
